Commissioned by the City of Oakland, this project consists of 5 wayfinding mosaics embedded in the sidewalk in the Dimond District shopping area at the corner of Fruitvale Ave and MacArthur Blvd. These mosaics are being used to direct pedestrians to various destinations in the immediate area and in the surrounding city. Each is 3 ft x 3 ft constructed with high fire ceramic tile.
This mosaic was inspired by Sausal Creek that runs through Dimond Canyon, the movement of water and the Rainbow Trout that live there. Location: Dimond Library, 3565 Fruitvale Avenue,
The Redwood Grove in Dimond Canyon Park and Joaquin Miller Park are featured in this mosaic. Location: 2450 Fruitvale Avenue [outside the Wells Fargo].
This mosaic showcases the Leimert Bridge which spans Dimond Canyon, a landmark feat of its day. Also celebrated is the heron that graces the creek with its presence. Location: near Bank of America, 2154 MacArthur Boulevard
The hummingbird was chosen as the main design element due to its positive symbolism in Native American culture. This mosaic celebrates the Native American Collection housed at the Dimond Library. Location: near La Farine Bakery, 3411 Fruitvale Avenue.
Exhibits the native flora found in Dimond Canyon: California Poppy, California Fuschia, Morning Glory, and California Grapes. Location: side of Farmer Joe’s Market, 3426 Fruitvale Ave.
